Alternative Living for the Aging's mission is to provide safe, affordable housing alternatives for low-income older people — alternatives to living alone and to institutionalization.
Founded in 1978, Alternative Living for the Aging (ALA) is a non-profit agency dedicated to providing low-income seniors with affordable, safe housing alternatives — alternatives to living alone and alternatives to institutionalization. Our goal is to advance the well-being and security of seniors through dignified housing programs encouraging independence through interdependence.
ALA now operates, and will continue to develop, new Cooperative Apartment Communities for low-income older people where they can live in a safe environment with friendly, caring neighbors. Additionally, ALA offers a free Housemate Matching Program where we facilitate matching seniors with other seniors, mid-age, and younger people 18+ in their own homes, apartments and condos so they may have affordable housing, companionship, a sense of security, and the ability to make ends meet.
ALA continues to develop a knowledge base of tools, resources, and expertise to assist others nationwide in providing senior housing and similar assistance programs for seniors in other communities.
