Success Stories
84-year-old Joe came into the ALA Service Center looking for a housemate. He'd lived in his house for 35 years and since being widowed a year earlier, felt lonely at home. Gabe, 79, came to ALA in search of affordable housing. ALA's Housing Counselor introduced the two men, who turned out to be an excellent match. While they'll each tell you the other has his quirks, they strike a good balance between spending quality time together and doing things on their own. Both men enjoy sharing part of their lives with a kindred spirit.
Laney, 97, was a widow who'd lived in her home for more than 50 years. Abel, 57, came to ALA because he had just one month to find a new, affordable living situation, and hoped that he could lend his talents somewhere as an in-home health aide. ALA's Housing Counselor introduced Laney to Abel, and they have been roommates since 2002. Laney enjoys Abel's patience, caring nature, and a sense of security at home, while Abel feels lucky to have such a lovely housemate. When Laney's needs changed, she reduced Abel's rent in exchange for his increased help around the house.
Sarah, 83, had been living in a rented 2 bedroom apartment for 34 years and didn't want to feel alone any more. Sarah's daughter Rebecca also wanted her mother to have someone with her in the apartment at night. Sarah met Maria, 77, through an ALA referral, and their roommate relationship has blossomed. Maria and Sarah prepare and enjoy dinners together, and Maria often accompanies Sarah on appointments. "I feel like someone has taken 500 pounds off of me," says Rebecca of her mother's new companion. "We hit the jackpot with Maria. She's a wonderful person."
